An Officer Remembered

If you are from the Philadelphia area, then I'm sure by now you've heard of the attempted robbery in North Philadelphia at a Dunkin Donuts which left a police officer dead. At first I viewed this as another story because I wasn't informed of all the surrounding details. However, after a few days I caught wind of the name of the officer and it just so happened to be the father of an individual that I grew up with. I would like to send out my condolences to the family and friends of Officer Chuck Cassidy. Having someone pass away is never a good thing, but it hurts much more when it is someone that you know. I don't usually like to rant on here but I guess this is as good of a time as any. I often find myself taking for granted my family...sometimes I go a week or two without even saying a word to them. Sure I'm busy and don't have a ton of time to catch up, but there is always time to say I love you. Always remember that and please try to value life because you never truly know when it won't be there anymore...

For a while, atleast with photography, I found myself bored. I remember back in the days of film I could wander the streets all day long just snapping away at subjects. Rather than be specific about the content that I captured, anything seemed to grab my attention. I don't know if it was the repetitiveness of photojournalism that did me in or what, but I lost that urge to discover. However, over the past few days I found myself pulling my car over at every chance just to have fun with my camera.

Tomorrow I'm off to New York for a shoot. Hopefully in my free time I'll be strolling the streets.

I used to have a professor that always spoke of two periods during the day in which the light was absolutely "perfect" for natural light exposures. Well I always remembered what he said about that, but I decided to combine both natural and artificial light. The timing on the photo isn't the best but it works.

Today I had the luxury of hanging out with the boys of Holmesburg Fishing and Game Association at their firing range. The majority of the guys were pretty friendly and I had a good time. The only downside to the day was me not wearing any ear protection while photographing the shotgun skeet. Oh well, you live and you learn.

Skateboard photography, as many of you may have noticed, has been something that I've always been a fan of. It wasn't until a few months ago that I made it one of my "concentrations". It's hard to get people to take you serious when you're not shooting with all the top gear. Over the past year I've been slowly but surely building my arsenal and the end results, especially when looking back about this time last year, are quite pleasing. I am aware that if I want to make even the smallest footprint in the industry, I have a long way to go but I think that's what makes it all so much fun.

I know that I've been yapping about summer coming to an end soon and how bummed I have been about that. Now, summer is truly over and it went out with the best weekend ever. This past weekend I had a triathlon shoot in Long Branch. I
went down a few days early to hang out with some people that I haven't seen in a long time.I can honestly say that I love it there; Long Branch is a crazy town where nothing seems to go wrong. Whenever I am there, my head is always so clear and I'm always smile. I don't know when I'm going to have a chance to go back there, but I hope it's soon. There isn't much that can beat having a great time with friends, surfing all day long, shredding all night long,and just chilling...good times.

I don't know what it is about the rain that soothes, that calms, that purifies, but I am sure glad that it's there. I've had a lot on my mind as of late and I guess sometimes it just takes the simplicity of mother nature to help you find yourself. I know the photo is cliche and all that fun stuff, but whatever...I've been making a habit of documenting my life in this sort of way.

I don't know what it is about this piece of wood with wheels attached that has kept me so entertained for the past 8 years. Ever since I stepped on a skateboard for the first time I knew that it would essentially be attached to my feet until I couldn't walk anymore. I attribute a great deal of my sanity to skateboarding. It is by far the most therapeutic activity that I indulge myself in. Whether it be jumping down stairs or just merely pushing down the street, skateboarding has never ceased to make me smile.

It's nice living with people who have a sense of humor. As some of you may know, not too long ago I acquired some pocket wizards. Well recently I figure a way to rig a third flash up. I asked Max, one of my new roommates, if he wouldn't mind posing for some shots. Well, Max was more than up for the job and within minutes he was improving with whatever he could find around the house...It's safe to say that this year will be....interesting?

This photo manipulation actually took some time and effort for me. It's been a while since I actually did a lot of work to make something...oh well...atleast I laughed for about a straight hour.

So today I went out with John and Chris for a little bit to this little nugget spot in Fishtown. I don't know why, but I didn't like the spot at all. The ground was haggard and there was rubbish all over. After a little bit, both guys throw down lips, both back and front. After the sesh, I went to Cecil where I proceeded to die. I don't know why but the heat really likes messing with me; I always seem to get the raddest heat headaches. Oh well, nothing a chilly slurpy can't heal.

I won't lie, I absolutely LOATHE getting up earlier than I have to. This morning, I got up at the wonderful hour of 3 A.M. to drive to Harrisburg(oh yeah, I hate driving long distances even more than I hate waking up early). I don't know what it is about this program, but it inspires me in so many ways. I woke up and met Kurt to go skating/shoot some photos. I've come to the conclusion that I cant figure crap with these pocket wizards out yet for skate photo; I'm really going to have to sit down with someone and have them explain this crap to me.

I had a job tonight in south philly and I wound up parking right next to my house from last year. Walking to Broad street and back, I ran into a ton of complete strangers all who greeted me in such a pleasant way. It made me miss the area so much. it's nothing like North Philadelphia, I can tell you that much.

I rarely have an opportunity to be a kid anymore, I find myself bouncing around aimlessly from school to work. However, today I found a few minutes to enjoy one of my childhood favorites...wiffleball. Sliding around in the grass and diving for popups was never so much fun. I really wish life held more of these days for me. I also ran into Dan, Kurt, and French from back home...kids I grew up with and skate with till this day. Kurt was one of the people that got me back into skating so I guess I owe a lot of my happiness in life to him. Either way, good times.

I am trying to get into the habit of bringing my camera out with me everywhere I go...kinda like an ongoing documentary of my life. I think it'd be cool to look back on years from now.

Oh well...who knows what will happen in the weeks to come...maybe I'll just hit the lottery and take a life-long vacation...that'd be the life.

Inspiration

I can't say that I remember this guys name, and I feel horrible because of that. But I was on assignment today and he was one of the speakers congratulating Mike Lutz. This man was a police officer in Philadelphia and upon investigating a crime scene, he along with his partner were gunned down. The assault was fatal for his partner and should've been for him also. He was badly injured and paralyzed. After months and months of therapy he regained his speech ability and can function normally. His struggle and determination is something that makes me value everything that I have. I love meeting people who can change your life so much in such a short time.

So today, there were 3 fires near us when skating. It was quite possibly the most retarded thing ever. At Drexel, we got kicked out of the spot and then as we were walking down to the car, we noticed a dumpster smoking. We took a closer look and noticed there was a mini-keg in there. Within seconds flames were shooting out of the dumpster and then the keg exploded. It was pretty gnarly.

So it looks weird...whatever. I like it. Today while at this Support The Troops rally, I was using a wide-angle and was closer to one of the speakers. As I was packing up my bag, a gentleman came up to me and said "That's why they invented long lenses...so you don't have to disrespect people like you did." I was kinda pissed off. Just because I am doing my job, I have to deal with crap like that. I guess it's a part of the job.

And the end for the class of 2007 was today. I had the opportunity to photograph portions of the graduation ceremony and it made me think a lot. I've come to the realization that I have only 365 days left to enjoy the finest years of my life. For the past three years, although I've had fun, I haven't done anything that I've REALLY wanted to; I always allow myself to be held back by my thoughts of uncertainty. I want to be able to look back on these years and long for them to happen again. I guess what I'm saying is that over the next year, a lot of things are going to change and hopefully all for the better.

It's absolutely insane how not even a week ago I was with Yolanda King in the same room enjoying her bubbly personality and this morning I wake up to the news that she has passed away. It's such a tragedy losing someone such as herself; a woman who fought to carry on the message of her father. I really wish there were more people out there like her...people who actually believed in something and did whatever possible to achieve it.

Today I had to do a package for the Courier Times. The theme of the package was the coming of spring and how people are starting to get out due to the nicer weather. I was kinda skeptical but I think it turned out alright in the end.

Sometimes, speaking to complete strangers helps you realize the most incredible things. This past week has been nothing short of perfection and has helped me to rediscover the passion that I once doubted; from now on things are going to be very different.

Life on the Streets

Steve Wood, a Temple News writer, decided a few weeks ago that he would take the non-conventional route for spring break. To save a few dollars, Steve decided that he would spend his week off relaxing on the streets of Philadelphia...homeless. With only a few basic necessities, Steve has set out to figure out what it's really like to have no place to call home.

Although Philadelphia's Love Park was once a haven for the homeless; it has now become a rarity to see the homeless camped out on the benches.

At the abandoned warehouse on Broad and Poplar, it is a common sight to see several individuals camped out, tightly wrapped in their worn clothes and tattered blankets.
